Lampard confirmed as Everton boss

Frank Lampard

Everton (4/1 To be relegated) have announced Frank Lampard will be their new manager after he signed a two-and-a-half-year contract at Goodison Park.

The former Chelsea player and manager was widely tipped to sign a contract at Everton after the board chose him over Vitor Pereira following a final round of interviews.

He replaces Rafael Benitez, who departed Everton earlier this month, with the club 16th in the Premier League.

Lampard has been out of work since leaving Chelsea in January 2021, following an 18-month stint in charge of the Blues.

Now, he is back in the Premier League with his immediate remit being to keep the Toffees in the top flight after a disappointing season so far.

Paul Clement, formerly of Derby and Reading, will join Lampard’s backroom team, along with Joe Edwards and Chris Jones, though Jody Morris, who served as his assistant at Chelsea and Derby will not be joining.

Coach and Everton icon Duncan Ferguson and goalkeeping coach Alan Kelly are expected remain in their positions.

Lampard says he cannot wait to get started at Everton and says he was attracted by the size and ambition of the club.

The 43-year-old said: “It is a huge honour for me to represent and manage a club the size and tradition of Everton Football Club.

“I’m very hungry to get started. After speaking to the owner, chairman and the board, I very much felt their passion and ambition. I hope they felt my ambition and how hard I want to work to bring it together.

“My first message to the players will be that we have to do this together. We’ll try to do our job and I know the fans will be there backing us.”

Lampard is Everton’s sixth manager in six years and his first match in charge will be their FA Cup fourth-round tie at home to Brentford (Match betting – Everton 11/10, draw 12/5, Brentford 23/10) on Saturday.

Three days later, he will take his side to St James’ Park to face Newcastle, in what already looks like a pivotal game.
